4 Ways to Spring Clean Your House Like a Pro

March 25, 2014

There is nothing like a warm Vancouver day in the springtime. The weather is mild, the cherry blossoms begin to bloom, and everyone has a certain spring in their step. A season of vibrance and renewal, March and April are the perfect months to set aside time to refresh your home.

Spring cleaning is never an easy task, but we have a few tricks up our sleeves to make the most of tidying, dusting, and vacuuming. Go ahead and open the windows for maximum sunlight, put on your favourite playlist, and get your whole family involved to make the process a breath of fresh air!

1. Before Anything, Prepare

Stop thinking of spring cleaning as a daunting task, and start seeing it as a new perspective. The secret? Take an hour or two to prepare beforehand. Set achievable goals like tackling one room only, or give yourself a time limit. This will minimize any stress you might have, and you’ll feel great about accomplishing the task at hand.

Having the right supplies is always necessary. Double-check that you are well equipped with a vacuum, duster, garbage bags, and cleaning products. We love The Soap Dispensary, a local Vancouver shop that sells biodegradable household cleaners that are free of harsh chemicals. Perfect for use around children, and they won’t bother those of us with allergies or sensitivities.

2. Eliminate Clutter

We could all use a good purge of our clothes, kitchen supplies, and office paperwork. Set aside time to go through you and your family’s belongings together. Recycle old documents and donate clothes, appliances, and cookware to your local charity. A good rule of thumb: If you haven’t worn it, used it, or looked at it in the last year, out it goes!

3. Deep Clean

Now the fun begins  — give your home a deep clean. Wipe down all countertops, as well as the inside of cabinets, wardrobe units, and any drawers. Even give the lampshades and bulbs a cleaning. Dust all surfaces, including your furniture, electronics, overhead fixtures, wall corners and door frames.

Freshen up the bedrooms by washing all of your sheets, duvet covers, and quilts. Flip mattresses over, then head to foot, to maintain their shape. And, of course, don’t forget to vacuum and mop the floors. Overwhelmed? Remember to take a step back and finish one task at a time.

4. Treat Yourself

After each goal on your spring cleaning checklist is finally complete, always be sure to treat yourself. Whether it’s putting your feet up with a glass of wine, or taking the family out for a nice meal, you deserve a pat on the back. Sit back, relax, and breathe in the scent of your home — Fresh and ready to welcome the new Spring season.
